My grandmother was a Surratt from Cass County,Texas. I was researching the Surratts of Cass County,Texas, when I discovered that Levi Wilson Surratt(1834-1893) had a Civil War pension and had served in Co. I, 32nd Texas Cavalry. The 32nd Texas Cavalry fought at Pea Ridge, Richmond,Kentucky, Murfreesboro, Jackson, Mississippi, Chickamauga,Nashville, Mobile Bay, and the Atlanta Campaign.
In Co. I, 32nd Texas Cavalry was a Cullen Montgomery Baker from Cass County,Texas, who killed two men before the Civil War and was a murderous outlaw during Reconstruction. He was a character in Louis L'Amour's western entitled "The First Fast Draw." I hope that Levi Wilson Surratt who served with Cullen Montgomery Baker during the Civil War was not a member of his gang after the war.
