While Republican leaders and abolitionists increasingly called for black suffrage, average white voters did not:

Braxton argues that Republican leaders were elites, out of touch with the racial experiences of most white people:

Great job Pat. Perhaps there is some little good to be gained by having an academic around occasionally. Much like a good used car salesman. Teasing but I do appreciate the work.

Braxton says that while white Southerners opposed black suffrage, they decided to accept it in their state laws because they saw such a course as hastening their full reenfranchisement. Northerners misinterpreted this as genuine support for black suffrage:

Braxton argues that the primary goal of the amendment was political self-preservation.

Braxton rejects the idea that the supporters of the 15th Amendment were, by and large, motivated by a desire for racial justice:

Braxton questions whether the 15th Amendment was properly passed by the Senate.

Braxton also questions the propriety of the state ratifications:

Braxton goes through a number of states where there were supposedly ratification irregularities. Here is what he writes about my own state:

Braxton concludes that no Southern state favored the 15th Amendment and that some Northern states ratified it irregularly:
