Have you ever read a passage where the author says "they were on our left" and thought "that can't be right" (rimshot)
I myself often say left when I mean right, and find myself editing posts to correct the mistake.
I was reading through the Samuel P Harrington diary, and none of it made sense to me. I got all the way to Champion Hill where he says "we continued on until we discovered a body of Confederates trying to gain the road on our right." Then it hit me, the road on the right was already taken by McPherson. He has been consistently swapping left and right.
I flipped to Big Black River Bridge to confirm, sure enough he states that Lawler went in "on our left."
I'm not sure that I've ever read a source that 100% swapped left for right and right for left.
