What great leadership tips have you learned, or learned to appreciate more, from a person who took an active role in the Civil War?

To get this started I will take an easy one. We are all managers - no matter what we do during the day. Life is a daily experiment in management and being critical of someone is sometimes required of us - at work as a 'boss', or home with the kids, or as a friend who needs to help another.

The Battle of Bristoe Station was a costly defeat for General A.P. Hill, and possibly his worst decision as a Corps Commander. A very apologetic Hill, overlooking the battlefield, strewn with his dead, explained what had transpired to General Robert E. Lee.

Lee could have blown up. This was after the loss at Gettysburg and the Army of Northern Virginia could not afford this kind of loss in manpower. Hill, who had served under Stonewall the past few years, was used to be talked down to, and was probably expecting more of the same.

Overlooking the battlefield, Lee delivered just a few words - that said more from a management stand point than any number of angry words. He looked at Hill and said "Bury these poor men and let us say no more about it."
