Is he missing an arm? Maybe its Howard?
Do you think maybe he is reading step by step instructions on how to secure your flank, post vedettes, and conduct a little recon?
"Generalship for Dummies"?Do you think maybe he is reading step by step instructions on how to secure your flank, post vedettes, and conduct a little recon?

Or how to type one-handed?
Nice photo... lots of character! Thanks for sharing it with us...
Photo I just bought. Does anyone recognize him or his typewriter? Maybe early 1900's?
I shave with a straight razor, and I can assure you that I'd grow a beard to if I had to use my left hand. The look of that missing arm made me think it was. Only general who I know to have lost an arm, and remained a general after the war. Too bad no one showed him how to use a razor. Should have belonged to Dollar Shave Club.
I found out the kind of typewriter it is from /r/typewriters on reddit: http://www.typewritermuseum.org/collection/index.php3?machine=williams1c&cat=kd
The 1891 date which the Williams was first manufactured corroborates the 1893 photo date from McClure's Magazine.
