Is it known anywhere who the last survivors were, Union or Confederate, of the opening engagement of the war? I recently came across several old newspaper articles pointing towards a veteran named Cpt. William Arthur Tyler (25 December, 1828 - 3 August, 1929) who was claimed to have been the last surviving member of the Federal garrison when it was bombarded. I can't find what unit he served with nor any mention of him on any roster of the defenders so I am doubtful of this claim.

Besides Tyler, the last Union veteran I'm aware of is QMSgt. William Henry Hamner (22 Apr, 1838 - 15 Feb, 1925) of the 1st US Artillery.

The last Confederate veteran I found was Felix Huston Robertson (9 Mar, 1839 - 20 Apr, 1928), future CSA General who served as a 2nd Lieutenant in an Artillery Regiment at Charleston Harbor.
