Gillmore returned from Virginia to South Carolina in Feb. 1865. He lands men at Bull's Bay and between that and Sherman's march north, compel Hardee to evacuate Charleston.

What prompted the landing at Bull's Bay?

Found out from E. Milby Burton's The Siege of Charleston that in Dec. 1863 Gillmore contemplated either capturing Charleston via James Island or Bull's Bay. Gillmore already had 27,000 men and far outnumbered Beauregard but wanted an additional 10-12k good men to ensure he would not have another Secessionville. Halleck did not respond. See page 209.

It only took me 4 1/2 years to learn this.
