Unit of measurement for a ship's speed. One knot equals 1.15 MPH.

Term comes from the use of a line tossed over the side of a ship at sea and allowed to play out for a short period of time. The equally-spaced knots on this line would be counted as it was going out, giving the navigator and captain the speed of the vessel per hour.
