THE BATTLE ON GREENBRIER RIVER: Interesting Particulars--The Strength ...
SPECIAL CORRESPONDENCE OF THE DISPATCH
The Daily Dispatch (1852-1865); Oct 12, 1861; ProQuest Civil War Era
pg. 2

A little kitten belonging to the company of the 23rd, during the engagement, was seen running along the entrenchments, and whenever a ball struck near it and raise the dirt, the little thing would jump and gambol around it in playful glee.

"A Virginia regiment had adopted a kitten who, as the bursting shells kicked up dirt and rocks, playfully chased down the debris, batting and tumbling over and atop the parapets."

During a very heavy barrage at the Battle of Resaca, some Rebel gunners were hunkered down in their holes, waiting it out. A cat was out in the middle of it, crying piteously. Finally one of the gunners shrugged his shoulders and went to its rescue. He made it back into his hole with the little critter, and after the battle, his battery adopted the cat and named it Resaca. Their new mascot rode with them on a caisson wherever they went. Don't remember if it survived the war.
