A little kitten belonging to the company of the 23rd, during the engagement, was seen running along the entrenchments, and whenever a ball struck near it and raise the dirt, the little thing would jump and gambol around it in playful glee.
"A Virginia regiment had adopted a kitten who, as the bursting shells kicked up dirt and rocks, playfully chased down the debris, batting and tumbling over and atop the parapets."
