Keep tavern To be in control, especially through good organization. This was a favorite expression of President Abraham Lincoln, who once said of Brigadier General Joseph Hooker that he could fight, but "whether he can "keep tavern" for a large army is not so sure." From: "The Language of the Civil War" John D. Wright p. 167
