June 22, 1807 - British ship Leopard fires upon the U. S. ship Chesapeake off the coast of Virginia, then boards her in search of British deserters. They remove 4 men.
June 22, 1822 - Denmark Vesey's plot for a slave rebellion comes to light in Charleston, South Carolina.
June 22, 1848 - The "Independent Democratic Convention" is held in Utica, New York, and consists mostly of Barnburners. They nominate Martin Van Buren as candidate for President.
June 22, 1861 - Col. Harvey Brown, USA, commanding at Fort Pickens, FL, reports that he will not return any fugitive slaves to their masters unless he is ordered to do so.
June 22, 1861 - Pro-union men meet in Greeneville, TN, to pledge allegiance to the United States.
