My Betty Crocker Cooky Book has a Jumbles recipe it says is from 1890, where they're flavored with cinnamon, and also claims that, "Every woman and every community had a special version of Jumbles; Bedford Jumbles, Philadelphia Jumbles, Coconut Jumbles, even Wine Jumbles." They also offer a Molasses Jumbles recipe from the WW II era (with variations), and Jubilee Jumbles with nuts (with coconut and Date or Raisin variations), as well as three Ginger Jumbles variations, and a peanut one.
Scanning my google search, modern cooks seem to use "Jumbles" for anything that's "Jumbled up", meaning they'll throw anything in there from M&Ms to oatmeal. Although according to Wikipedia, the original word jumble meant "twin" and referred to their shape. I'm starting to think they should be called the chaos cookie...
