Never thought I'd write this post.
Blip.tv has A LOT of great presentations at the Virginia Historical Society. Today I watched Dr. Nelson Lankford's talk called "The Crooked Road To Civil War." He focused on how Virginia struggled with the secession/union question, showing how doggedly the pro-union leaders kept hoping to avert a war. He also highlighted some of the key players in the process. One of them was Jubal Early. All I knew about Ole Jube was the Shenandoah campaigns, the battle of Monocacy and the burning of Chambersburg. Turns out, he was extremely outspoken in his anti-secession views. Even after the firing on Sumter and Lincoln's call for volunteers to put down the rebellion, Early was warning Virginians that very often those who begin revolutions are not the ones who finish them.
A very interesting talk. The link is here:

Jubal Early is discussed at 13:30, 21:59 and 29:30.
