I've recently dug into my father's side of the tree and found a lot of interesting bits. The one thing that has caused me the most difficulty is with my 3rd Great Grand Uncle, Joseph Keith Williams, born on 26 May 1831 in Smyth County, Virginia. When looking through Ancestry.com he was linked to a source saying he died on November 27, 1863 (assumed Mine Run as the date correlates), presumably his headstone in Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania NBP's cemetery.
Doing a little digging, this is for a J Williams, but of the 1st New York Infantry (believed to be Co. A). Joseph Keith was from Smyth County, Virginia. Thinking it possible that he maybe could've stayed loyal to the Union I checked the 1st NY roster and there is no Joseph Keith listed. There is a marker in Smyth County that he did die in 1863, but no specific date. And Findagrave.com has a member there that says he died at Fredericksburg.
I've looked at multiple databases and can't find a Joseph Keith Williams that matches up outside of one that's for the 16th Virginia Infantry (Union). But there is no information that I can find on this regiment and so I can't seem to place whether it is him or even if he did serve in the military (for either side).
Any help or hints?
