Once Upon a Time in Quincy: Attorney-Civil War veteran made significant contributions

If you wander around Woodland Cemetery, you might come across an interesting tombstone memorializing John M. Cyrus, a prominent Quincy attorney and Civil War veteran who served in the 50th Illinois Infantry.
The rather tall obelisk contains the birth and death dates, and is draped from the top to midway down. On the bottom half of the obelisk are a carved flag, a sheathed saber and stars. The fact that the marker stands so close to the Maertz Family plot made this author curious about any possible connection between Cyrus and the Maertzes.
