John Brown and the Election of 1860 Dennis Frye talked about the reactions of both Southerners and Northerners following abolitionist John Brown’s 1859 raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry and his resulting execution. By using quotes from period newspapers and letters, Mr. Frye set the stage for the nation’s divided sentiments heading into the election of 1860, which was won by Abraham Lincoln.
