At times it seems like Jefferson Davis had a fixation on Vicksburg. But maybe not. Could the Confederate forces at Vicksburg could have been used somewhere else? Was there any real alternative to trying to hold Vicksburg that could have greatly impacted the outcome of the war? Certainly the Confederate forces could be used somewhere else but this would also free up considerable Union forces as well. I have some doubts, that given the Confederate effort in the Western Theater, if the additional Confederate forces could have been used in a way that significantly over shadowed the possible use of additional Union forces in the same theater.
