On January 9, 1861, students from the Citadel in South Carolina fired on the Federal supply ship Star of the West as it steamed for Fort Sumter with supplies.

Two shots were ired from the Confederate battery on Morris Island but no damage was reported. Neither Lincoln nor Davis chose to make an issue of it at the time, but the shots fired by gunner George Haynesworth as the ship approached Charleston harbor predated Beauregards bombardment of the fort by three months.
