The late 1870s, continuing into the '90s, saw a number of exchanged visits of Northern and Southern veterans and militia organization. Part of a conscious drive for reuniting the country, and fostering friendship and understanding between the former foes. One such instance was the June 1887 visit to Boston of members of Robert E. Lee Camp No.1, UCV, of Richmond, Va. They came as guests of John A. Andrew Post No. 15, GAR. It was a gala occasion:
