My grandfather said his grandfather who served in 6th Regiment, Indiana Cavalry did not go on the March to the Sea but was sent elsewhere. It sounded like the regiment went on the Atlanta campaign but HE alone was sent elsewhere!

Could this be possible? Does anyone know why someone would be sent elsewhere? My grandfather said that his grandfather had been an aide to General Sherman at some point. But if this were true why would one of his aides not go with Sherman?

The 6th Regiment, Indiana Cavalry in April 1864 joined "Sherman's army at Dalton," Georgia.

If anyone who is familiar with military procedure of the the period has any speculations I'd be very interested.
