I am new to all this but my understanding is that many authentic things were called Bowie knives. There was no standard issue...
Bowie was a specific pattern of blade, regardless of who manufactured it or how it was constructed or issued. But sure enough almost any large "battle knife" is called a "Bowie knife" among folks who are not knife mavens.
