I do not believe there was really any true Irish army uniforms worn during the Civil War era. This is because there were not any Irish army uniforms to copy. This does not mean that some Civil War units made up largely made up of Irish-Americans did not attempt to show off there heritage. In the end most Irish-Americans both in the Union army and the Confederate army wore standard uniforms. What Irish-American units wore uniforms with some type of "Irish" influence?
During the Civil War some Irish-American units wore green trim on their uniforms. For example the Baker Guard Zouaves of the 69th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment in 1861 wore Zouave jackets with green trim. In 1862 the 35th Indiana Infantry Regiment (1st Irish regiment) wore dark green kepis with a gold shamrock emblem. On the Confederate side the Emerald Guards of the 8th Alabama Infantry Regiment went off to war in green frock coats and green kepis. The Emerald Guards switched to standard Confederate uniforms with green trim soon after they reached Virginia.
Antebellum militia units in both the North and South were known to wear green uniforms or uniforms with green trim. An example of this is the Irish Jasper Greens of Georgia. Does any of our forum members want to fill us in about antebellum green uniforms or uniforms with green trim from their home states?
