I'm trying to find out if anyone might have an idea what this may be. I acquired it 60 years ago for $15.

Paging @Lanyard Puller ... if he can't tell you more, then nobody can. It's worth considerably more than $15, undoubtedly.

I'd like to know if the barrel is rifled. If so it might be traced back to the 1st SC infantry, as noted above may be a Palmetto and it's possible it made a trip to Southern PA.

Do need to see the lock plate as well.

Easily a $10,000 piece if so.

A photo of the lock plate markings would be definitive.
So far you have what looks like a South Carolina butt plate and an 1851 dated barrel tang.

Before jumping to the conclusion that it's a Palmetto Armory musket, there was also a contract in 1848 for model 1842 muskets.
Benjamin Flagg and Asa Waters sent a total of 668 to SC. The Flagg muskets {first 100), had silver numbered escutcheons and mixed parts. Asa Waters completed the contract, also with parts he had available. None of these contract muskets would win a gunsmithing prize !!!

I think the jury is still out on this girl
Some photos of both:

Most of them had the SC buttplate, stamped in almost all possible angles and directions.

The numbered Flaggs are far more valuable {rarity} than the Waters.. Flagg #2,
