Ice, Our Ancestor's Summer Kill Or Cure

The pace of innovation and urban growth in the US, including Baltimore, Louisville, and St. Louis, was accelerating.

Could ice harvesting been seasonal work for guys who had a "main" job the rest of the year?
Alot of river towns still have warehouses made of large stone blocks that were icehouses.

Would suspect alot of the industry came from other river trades, such as fishermen, riverboat laborers or clammers when the river wasn't froze.
