The design pattern worn on the sleeves of officers of the Confederate Army. Rank defined how many lines were in the "Hungarian Knot."

The ornamental Hungarian knot of four braids width, for Generals.
The ornamental Hungarian knot of was three braids width for the three grades of field officers colonel, lieutenant-colonel, and major
The ornamental Hungarian knot of Captains wore on sleeve Hungarian knot of two braids width, and first and second lieutenants, one braid.

I am just quoting General M. Sorrel, CSA - He identified it as the Hungarian Knot.

In textile identification we know it now as the Hungarian Chain Knot.

Just some thoughts.
