Civil War Talk is once again featuring some book reviews on its homepage. I will look through book reviews that are in appropriate format and recommend some to be featured. If it is recommended, due to a backlog, it will likely be featured a month or two after you initially post it.

To be considered, the review must be original and written by the Civil War Talk member. Reviews from other web sites or newspapers or journals will not be considered for Feature status. The review must be posted in the "Book and Movie discussion Tent." You must used the "Book Review" prefix which is found on a drop down menu on the left of the thread title when you create the thread. Before there is any text in the thread itself, you must show a picture of the book cover.

Here is an excerpt from a post Mike (the owner of CWT) wrote on book reviews that might be featured:

Want to have your book review featured on the homepage of CivilWarTalk?

Please make sure your review follows these guidelines:

  • The Title of the book should be in the Title of the Thread.

  • An image of the cover of the book should be at the top of the thread. (do a Google Image Search, or ask me for help!)

A full book review may concern only one book or monograph or several works. Its length is about 600-1200 words. Longer Reviews are okay if you break the review into sections. The review should give readers an engaging, informative, and critical discussion of the work.

The header of your review could include:
  • Author(s) or editor(s) first and last name(s)
  • Title of book
  • Year of publication
  • Place of publication
  • Publisher
  • Number of pages
  • Price (please indicate paperback or hard cover) if available
  • ISBN if available
The review could consider:
  • The intended audience for the book and who would find it useful;
  • The background of the author;
  • The main ideas and major objectives of the book and how effectively these are accomplished;
  • The soundness of methods and information sources used;
  • The context or impetus for the book - - political controversy, review research or policy, etc.;
  • A comparison with other works on this subject;
  • Constructive comments about the strength and weaknesses of the book;
  • For edited books: dominant themes with reference to specific chapters as appropriate; and implications of the book for research, policy, practice, or theory.
At the end of your review, please include:
  • Your first and last name (or username if you prefer)
  • A brief biographical note (optional)

If you follow this link from James N. you will see an example of book review in the proper format:

https://civilwartalk.com/threads/sh...anged-the-civil-war-by-larry-j-daniel.144272/

To be featured the review does not need to be long, but it has to be more than a blurb. Mike has suggested that it be at least 600 words, though slightly shorter reviews will be considered.

Note: In my experience, having your review featured will get you between 200 and 500 extra "views." So if you want your review to be read, this is a good option.

Also, some of you may have already posted reviews that don't conform to the feature format. If you want these reviews featured, start a new thread in the proper format.

Just bumping this to remind book reviewers that if they follow a few easy steps I will nominate their review to be featured.
