Hello , for Christmas I got a carpet haversack. I was wondering how often was those pattern of haversacks was used by the confederate army?

I think you would be hard pressed to find one in period photographs, they tended to be too unwieldy and heavy on the march, particularly when wet. The most often found Confederate haversacks are made of canvas, that said, captured Federal haversacks were probably used in great numbers. The Federal haversack, unless inked with period I'd would be hard to identify today as to which side it might have had the most use.

Period photographs and diaries are your best resource, mostly consisting of POWs. Go to the Library of Congress site and blow up the various POW photographs to their max and you will get an idea. Early in the war I can see carpet haversacks in use, but this is just a guess on my part. Mom and Dad may have figured that a carpet type bag would be of some use upon leaving for war.......
