How Important Were Black Soldiers to Union Victory?

(Spoiler alert ... I mean black Union soldiers!)

How important was the decision to enlist blacks in the Union army to eventual Union victory? Was that victory otherwise possible? Apparently 1 of every 7 US soldiers in 1864 was African American, and that must have meant something given the triumph of attrition and the numbers of three-year men leaving that spring.
