How far back can you trace your Ancestry?

I never have traced my ancestry. Always heard GGGrandpa was an old Indian chaser. And GGGrandma was an old Indian. One of my cousins got as far back as 8 or so generations.

My great-uncle has been able to go back to 16th century England with some of my dad's family. Not the furthest back, but I think the most interesting is John Lisle and his wife Alice. John was involved with trying Charles I and then was assassinated himself in 1664. About 20 years later, Alice was spared being burned at the stake and instead got her head chopped off. :O o:

In my own personal research, I've got back to about the mid-1800s with most of them, though some of them elude me. I hit a dead-end with my grandma's family because they apparently lived in the middle of nowhere and didn't bother to keep many records. Got back to about the same time period with my mom's family too.
