I'm looking info on how did the federal government get its money before the civil war? Did the states pay to the federal government some sort of taxes - or part of their own collection of taxes, or did the federal government get the money from taxation of foreign trade, or what? Or how did the states financed their own administration? I'm sure that there is some thread here, so point me in to the right direction, if you can? Not looking for very detailed info, just trying to get the big picture for my essay.
