The scholarly journal Civil War History has a Historians Forum on Reconstruction in the September 2015 issue. I am not linking to it because you need Muse access to read it. However, I did want to point to one of the questions posed to the panel of historians as well as give short versions of their answers.

One of the persistent questions that students ask about Reconstruction involves a counter-factual: If Abraham Lincoln had not been assassinated, how would the history of this period have unfolded?
