Grant's aide Horace Porter visited Arkansas in December 1868 to determine the conditions there. The state had experienced severe political violence in 1868. This is Porter's report.

The last paragraph, about the raid by the klan, in Porter's report is interesting. It is thought, though of course can't be proven, that Forrest may have led that raid dumping the rifles in the Mississippi. If it wasn't him it was someone very, very familiar with his raiding style. Quite professionally done.
