Historic marker dedicated to Bristol railroad history and train station
The land for the railroad facilities was donated in 1848 by the Rev. James King, and the first passenger train arrived on Oct. 1, 1856, via the Norfolk and Western line. In 1858, the Southern Railway line linked Bristol to Knoxville, Tennessee, which helped the Twin City become a regional manufacturing and commercial hub.

Construction of the railroad was instrumental to the growth of Bristol. Buchanan said by the time the Civil War started in 1861, Bristol had grown from a couple of buildings, less than a decade prior, to a town with a population of about 1,600. During the Civil War, the first train station, a large section of the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad and parts of the Twin City were destroyed during the raids of Union Cavalry Gen. George Stoneman, Buchanan said.
