    Glad to be here.

I'm the creator and webmaster of Vermont in the Civil War, a grass-roots effort to document Vermont's participation in the war. Site includes 37,000 soldiers (Union, Confederate, Colored Troops), civilians who participated in the war effort, including a growing section on Vermont women. Have documented 75% of burials of these folks with gravestone photographs.

I'm coming up on 21 years involved in this project, and just now getting enough breathing room to be able to participate in fora like this.

My definition of a Vermonter for the purpose of this project is anyone who served in a Vermont unit, regardless of where they were born, anyone born in Vermont, regardless of where they served, and all Civil War veterans buried in Vermont.

I am currently researching a young soldier who volunteered in Vermont, but was born in NY, died in Nottoway County, Virginia, and whose family had since moved to Moline, Illinois, where his name is inscribed on a memorial. He was the nephew of Genl Lewis Addison Grant. I am yet to find a photograph of him, but I know there were some taken...perhaps not before he left Vermont, though. Delighted that you are finally finding the time to join the site...I am only new myself...Welcome
