One of the persons charged in the conspiracy to assassinate Abraham Lincoln; he escaped with actual assassin John Wilkes Booth from April 14-26, 1865; was taken near Bowling Green, Virginia. Tried with the rest of the conspirators, Herold was convicted and sentenced to death. He was hanged July 7, 1865.
