Civil War soldiers name local fraternal posts for their leaders

Local Civil War soldiers had their own heroes.

An easy way to discover whom they esteemed is to read the titles of the Grand Army of the Republic posts instituted in the county. The GAR was a fraternal organization, founded in the late 1860s, for Civil War veterans. It began as a social, supportive, philanthropic gathering but eventually became one of the first organized advocacy groups in American politics.

The GAR movement grew throughout the late 19th century until almost every community in the country had its own post.
