There are many ways of gaining information from the same source. Where the trouble is, where it is a publication that cannot always be accessed by book, digital or other means. Not everybody can afford a Civil War Library or have time to look up things manually.
I think it is too much to require people to go into the extremes of details until it is warranted. Such as, when people pull out quotes and they are suspect. Parts of an official report, without giving proper label/title, volume and such, as to skew, alter, tamper with so much, as to fit into their agenda rather than placing before all the entire report provided by link, by reference, etc., so all can see for themselves. So too, with military manuals. They are good resources. Not all military manuals are online to read, some have to be read and transposed manually, e.g. The 1862 Army Officer's Pocket Companion - A Manual for Staff Officers in the Field.
Nothing will be perfect, especially when it comes to out of print books, magazines that are not digital and limited to subscribers, or personal diaries, etc.
I am not going to hold my breath--as it isn't required that people quote sources and such when they post. If someone does--I treat it as a personal opinion and move on. If there is a quote then references would be polite and most welcomed...but, that is just a personal opinion.
Just some thoughts.
Respectfully submitted for consideration,
M. E. Wolf
