I found this for $5 at a roadside antiques sale just north of Fond Du Lac, WI on Hwy 45. I asked if he had any Civil War firearms or parts, and this was all he thought might be of that era. Lot of neat old Americana there this weekend. It measures 32 3/4" from the top of the butt to the forend. Looks like scratched initials on the left side - J H? No clue what the odd-shaped hole is in the trough of the forend. Any help with dating and make/model would be greatly appreciated. Maybe it was shortened from a rifle to a carbine? Serious crack at the grip forward, plus sadly overall poor storage(?) crack lengthwise from the bottom of the butt forward. Thanks, Eric.

It was originally a musket of the model 1841 flavor and has been cut-down.
