Hello all,

I've been away for awhile trying to focus on work and other projects around the house but I just received these sweet canvas gaiters and I wanted to share them with you. They were sold to me as Spanish American War but I believe, the buttons at least, may be earlier. Rafael Eledge just sold a very similar, almost identical, pair of gaiters on his website as Civil War era. The gaiters are made of medium weight canvas, they have 6 cuff sized Waterbury Button Co buttons to fasten them and there is a metal bar behind the buttons to stiffen the gaiters presumably. The buttons are held in place by metal "staple" like fasteners. I cant find an exact match for the backmark in my book so I thought I would post here to see if anybody can help me out.

I can't see the whole back but with the large letters is a post war button.

Yeah it's kind of hard to get a good picture of the backmark. Can you post a picture of the smaller letters so I can see the difference? Any idea how late these buttons were used? I know the chicken neck eagle button started being struck around 1875-1902 but I'm sure they probably used up old stock along with the new buttons.

So when you say larger letters, is it the blockier style letters that make it post war or is it the "font size" ? My picture didn't turn out really well but the letters are not blocky like the first backmark you posted. Honestly it is most similar to the first backmark in the second set but I don't see a star. I'll see if I can get a better picture.

It's really difficult to get my camera to focus on the button, it keeps trying to focus on the gaiters. This one may be a little better though.
