Found this site while looking for information about my great, great uncle, Lt. Colonel William Proctor Smith. I was most interested to read the discussion as to whether he was considered to be Robert E. Lee's chief engineer. This is what I was told by my family although I have not verified with records, etc. His sister-in-law was my great-grandmother, Virginia Lee Hancock Smith, whom I knew as a child.
