A man of 'The West' ..now the Midwest.... After early higher education at Kenyon.. he graduated 15 of 45 in the May 6 Class of 1861.... Assigned a 2nd Lt. In the 2nd U.S. Cavalry.. he almost immediately was promoted to 1st Lt. and into the membership of Battery D 5th Regt. U.S. Regular Light Artillery.... The battery almost destroyed at First Manassas.. he fought through the Peninsular Campaign and was in command of Battery D for Second Manassas......
