He was a Unionist pre war.

Was a statue of him in the middle of the town square in Lebanon. Don’t know if it was still there.
 
His original unit was the Lebannon Blues which became part of the 7th Tennessee Infantry.Hatton soon made Colonel of the regiment and served with distinction in the Peninsula Campaign. His promotion to brigadier for that "distinct service" came on May 23, 1862 but was not confirmed by the Senate.
