Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 3rd Bde/2nd Divn/III Corps in Second Bull Run campaign, commanded 3rd Bde/2nd Divn/I Corps at South Mountain, Antietam (w), November 1862 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded XIII Corps, incapacitated by wounds, commanded defences at Bermuda Hundred during the Petersburg campaign, commanded Dist. of Nottaway.
