Pre-War Profession Civil engineer, deputy sheriff, lawyer, militia colonel.
War Service April 1861 Col. of 4th Pennsylvania, served with Franklin at First Bull Run after his regiment refused to fight - Medal of Honor, November 1861 Col. of 51st Pennsylvania, Burnside's North Carolina expedition, commanded 1st Bde/3rd Divn/IX Corps at Wilderness, Spotsylvania, May 1864 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 3rd Divn/IX Corps at Petersburg, Ft Stedman, provost marshal at the trial of Lincoln's assassins.
Brevet Promotions Maj. Gen. U.S.V.
March 25 1865.
Post War Career Army service, auditor general, governor, postmaster, port collector.
