Hartford hopes to preserve Civil War enlistment center

HARTFORD — “The Heart of Washington County” is also the heart of the area’s Civil War history, and officials want to keep it that way.

The Civil War enlistment center on Hartford’s Main Street is the only one remaining in New York, but the building has some problems with its foundation.

“We have bad shoes over there, and it’s causing some back and knee problems,” said town Supervisor Dana Haff.

Parts of the building’s foundation are “crumbling and falling away,” he said.

A little more than a year ago, Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner, D-Round Lake, secured a $50,000 state grant to remedy issues at the enlistment center. The grant has since been approved by the state Assembly’s Ways and Means Committee, and the town is waiting for the money to be administered by the state’s Dormitory Authority, Haff said.

On Tuesday, Hartford Historical Group President Peter Swano was named as the project manager for the rehabilitation project.
