I remember getting a detailed OoB for Hardee's forces in South Georgia in a basic book about Franklin-Nashville and Sherman's March (I believe it was by Osprey Publishing). But It seems I've lost the copy I had back when I moved houses two years ago. I can't find a similar OoB online. Wikipedia has an OoB for Sherman's forces, but not the Confederates (it shows a red link on the Sherman's March page, so someone probably was gonna get around to making it but just never did, I assume), and google search is getting me zilch.

Does anyone have the OoB?

Thank you. This is helpful.
I know it also included G. W. Smith's Militia Division and Wheeler's Cavalry.

The organization of troops for Hardee on Nov. 20, 1864 shown above is a long time stand by and I rely on it a lot.

However, Hardee's force was compiled of the flotsam and jetsam of the Confederacy. As such, the organizations were necessarily provisional and fluid [to say the least].

I have compiled a summary of notes concerning Hardee's force extending to about Dec. 21; the day Savannah was evacuated. This is down and dirty minutiae, but still instructive to follow the evolution of Hardee's command. Grab a cup of coffee and follow along; if you are so inclined.

12/2 the 10th NC Hvy Arty Bn reached Savannah where it joined Gen Hardee’s force located about 45 miles from the city. Sherman’s advance forced Hardee to retreat closer to Savannah where on 12/8 the 10th found itself in the defensive perimeter of the city. At this time, the Bn became part of a temporary Bgde commanded by Col Hardy, of the 50th NC Regt. They remained in these lines until 12/20 when they were evacuated, withdrawing through Savannah to Hardeeville, SC & continuing to serve as part of Hardy’s Bgde.
A contemporary publication Dec 1864, says: "At the late battle of Harrison's Old Field, this was an advance position, 14 miles from Savannah. Major Stevenson was in command with:
-a part of his own Bn, (36th NC)
-& parts of the 50th NC
-& 40th NC & 10th NC Bns

----12/18 Savannah, Hardee to Gen Sam Jones: Send back to Florence all that part of Brooks' Foreign Bn now at Summerville, under guard, & turn them over to the officer cdg Federal prisoners, to be confined as prisoners of war. Order the officers to rejoin their commands

12/15 Charleston, Beauregard to Gen Cooper: Gen Hardee reports at Savannah, on the 9th, his effectives of all arms at about 10,000. Gen Jones reports from Pocataligo, on 12th, his effectives of all arms at about 5,500. There is no report from Gen Wheeler, but his forces must be about 3,000

12/20 Enclosure-Memorandum of orders to be issued by Lt-Gen Hardee immediately after the evacuation of Savannah
12/20/64 Mil Div of the West, Pocataligo-

I. Gen G. W. Smith will proceed immediately with his command to Charleston & thence to Augusta, after being relieved by other troops, as hereinafter directed.

II. Gen McLaws' Div (the senior cdg) & Col Anderson's Bgde (preceding) will proceed immediately to Charleston & relive Gen G. W. Smith's Div.

III. Gen Wright's Div & Gen Chestnut's command (about 1,500 men), consisting of SC reserves & 2nd, 3rd, & 4th SC Militia, to the 4th Military Sub-District, a reserve of about 500 men being stationed at Green Pond & another of like number near Adams' Run. Gen Robertson will report to Gen Wright for temporary duty, to advise as to disposition of troops, & then to be assigned to duty as circumstances may require.

IV. Col G. P. Harrison's & Col A. C. Edwards' Bgdes to be stationed on the left bank of the Combahee, guarding the several passages (about six) across that river, to Barnwell CH; Gen Young’s' command to be increased by the 7th Ga Cav (dismtd), Col E. C. Anderson, Jr., cdg, as reserves at or near Blue House, between the Combahee & Ashepoo Rivers.

V. The 3rd SC Cav & Kirk's Sqdrn will cover the left (or coast) flank of the retiring troops. After crossing the Combahee Major Jenkins, with Capt’s Seabrook's & Peeples' Co’s 3rd SC Cav, will take post on John's Island, & Capt Kirk's Sqdrn will proceed, via Charleston to Christ Church Parish & take post near & northeast of Mount Pleasant.

VI. Gen Wheeler's Corps (that part of it east of Savannah River, & the remainder if it should come up) will guard crossings of the Savannah & New Rivers & the landings east of Screven's Cause way until forced by the enemy to retire. He will then guard & defend the country between the Savannah River & the defensive line of the Combahee & the right flank of that line, resting at or rear Barnwell CH, & extending by the shortest defensible line to the Savannah River, covering Augusta.

VII. Col Gonzales will assign the field Arty now in SC to the most appropriate positions for the defense of the 4th Sub-District & the line of the Combahee, from Salkehatchie bridge to the coast, taking care to assign the Btrys to the positions with which their respective cdrs are most familiar. He will assign, subject to Gen Hardee's approval, the field Btrys coming from Savannah, as circumstances may indicate, for the best defense of the line of the Combahee, the 4th Sub-District, & Augusta.

VIII. As soon as the service of Gen Taliaferro can be spared from the duty on which he is now engaged, he will proceed to James Island & resume his former command, assigning to their appropriate positions the troops of Gen McLaws' Div & Col Anderson's Bgde, destined for that island.

IX. As soon as McLaws’ Div moves from Hardeeville he will immediately proceed to Pocataligo & relive Maj Gen Sam Jones, & take the immediate command of the troops on the line of the Combahee.

X. On being relieved by McLaws, Jones will proceed to Charleston & resume his command & enter on the duties designated by S O # -, from Dept Hqs

12/21 (Received 22d) Hardeeville, Hardee to Jefferson Davis: On the 19th the enemy forced a landing on the SC side, so near my communication that to save the garrison it became necessary to give up the city. Its evacuation was successfully accomplished last night. All the light Arty & most of the stores, munitions, &c., were brought off. I learn that there is a misapprehension as to the force disposable for the defense of Savannah. It summed up, land side & water side, militia, reserve, dismtd Cav, local & details, 9,089

12/22/64 Hardeeville, By order of Lt-Gen Hardee

Gen Wright will have command & of the district, & will station a reserve force of 500 men at Green Pond, & a like number at Adams' Run Station. Gen B. H. Robertson will report to Gen Wright, to give him such assistance in the disposition of troops as his knowledge of the country will enable him to do, & will afterward be assigned to duty as circumstances may require.

J. Gonzales, chief of Arty, who will, with the approval of the Lt-Gen cdg, assign them to position the most appropriate for the defense of the 4th Mil. 11/30 Honey Hill, S C

The defense of the Savannah & Charleston RR was the responsibility of the 3rd SC Military District cdr, Lt Col Colcock

Alerted by the vedettes, the 32nd Ga & 47th Ga Regts were ordered by Hardee (in Savannah) from Charleston to Grahamville via the Savannah & Charleston RR.

Chestnut’s 350-man SC Reserve Regt in Augusta was ordered to Grahamville but would not arrive until midnight on the day of battle,

-while Baker’s 1,960-man NC Bgde traveling from NC would began arriving just before daybreak on the day after the battle.

The nearest Infy units that could reach the area in time were the 1,880-man Ga Militia Bgdes & Bns under the command of G. W. Smith, presently on a northbound train heading for Savannah. Smith’s entire Ga Militia Div was scheduled to make the trip to Savannah from Macon but a lack of rolling stock limited all but two Bgdes & two Bns from making the journey. The train carrying the Ga Militia units arrived in Savannah at 0200 on the day of battle.

Gen Robertson’s reinforcements arrived on the field at 1630 as the battle sputtered to a halt. They were held as a reserve in case the battle resumed.

About 4.30 p. m. Gen Robertson arrived with a portion of the 32nd Ga from Charleston, a Btry, & a Co of Cav. These constituted an effective reserve, but came up too late to be used in the action.

At midnight Gen Chestnut arrived at Grahamville Station with about 350 eff muskets of SC reserves, & a little before daylight upon morning of Dec 1, Gen Baker came up with 860 of his Bgde from NC; the remainder of his command (about 1,100) reached Coosawhatchie at 9 o'clock

Balance of Ga Militia Div

Although severely repulsed at Honey Hill on 11/30, the Federals within a short time set on foot new expeditions with a view to obtaining possession of the Charleston & Savannah RR.

12/1 Mary Preston writes-At Coosawhatchie, the Yankees are landing in great force. Our troops down there are raw militia, old men & boys never under fire before; some college cadets, in all a mere handful. The cradle & the grave have been robbed by us, they say. Sherman goes to Savannah & not to Augusta.

12/4 Hardee to Sam Jones-Make your Hqs at Pocotaligo, or some other convenient point, & take immediate charge of the forces for the defense of the Charleston & Savannah RR.

The troops in that vicinity, under Gen Jones' command, consisted of the 5th & 47th Ga Regts, a Bn of the 32d Ga Regt, a portion of the 3d Regt SC Cav, Kirk's sqdrn of Cav, some SC reserves & militia, some Ga reserves, & several Btrys of light Arty. These forces were distributed at various points extending from Pocotaligo to the Savannah River, & along the left bank of that river to Sisters ferry, & above. Those concentrated at & near Grahamville were under the immediate command of Gen Chesnut, & those stationed at & near Coosawhatchie were commanded by Gen Gartrell. The reserves were poorly organized & imperfectly drilled. The militia was to a great extent undisciplined & lacked arms.

Since that he has ordered to Charleston a Regt of the NC reserves, & I do not think, as far as I can judge, that more troops can be taken with propriety, unless we were certain that all danger of an attack was removed from that point. In addition, I sent Gen Young with about 400 Cav men (without horses) & ordered all those previously sent to Ga & SC to report to him at Augusta, which Hampton thinks will give him about 800 mounted men, which I thought would strengthen the Cav very much in that Dept. Gen Baker has also gone to Gen Bragg, so that he will have another good Cav cdr. I fear I can do nothing more under present circumstances.

12/6/64 Augusta, to Gen Hardee: Wheeler so far off he could not cross river in time. Gen Young's Bgde (250 mounted, 550 dismtd) moves today by rail to Pocotaligo, to observe left bank Savannah

12/6 during the night of the 6th, Gen Jones concentrated on the Charleston & Savannah RR, near the Tullifinny trestle,

The 47th Ga Regt,

A Bn of the 32nd Ga,

A Co of the 1st SC Arty,

Major White's Bn of cadets,

A Bn of NC Reserves which had just arrived,

& Bachman's Btry of light Arty,

& ordered Col Edwards, the senior Col, to attack the enemy with this force at daylight in the morning-Gen Gartrell was directed to make a spirited demonstration from Coosawhatchie as soon as he should hear Col Edwards's guns: &, if Col Edwards's movement proved successful, to press forward with the attack. Both attacks failed of their object; & Gen Jones, believing that he had not a sufficient number of reliable troops to justify him in renewing the assault, endeavored by defensive works to hold the RR. Meanwhile, the enemy was busily occupied in strengthening their position.

Thank you for the enlightening work of the previous posters. I have taken the liberty of creating a reasonably detailed OOB from the information provided and the sources mentioned at the end. The numbers regarding manpower and guns are mostly taken from the sources, but are based in small parts on estimates. Since the sources for Sherman's March are very fragmented and contradictory, I make no final claim to complete accuracy. Corrections and comments are always welcome!
