Just wanted to wish all a Happy Valentine's Day. Thanks to all for your threads and posts about food and the many great recipes.

Since today is Shrove Tuesday and tomorrow is Valentine's Day, thought post on the Grasshopper Cocktail. It is a mint flavored after dinner drink. It is said it was invented by Philip Guichet who was owner of Tujague's Bar in the French Quarter of New Orleans. It gained popularity in 1950s and 1960 throughout the South.

The Grasshopper Pie was based on this drink. The pie dates back to 1950s when mousse like pies were at their peak. The grasshopper cocktail's main ingredient was crème de menthe. The grasshopper pie used this or mint flavoring.

Trivia on name grasshopper:

The word grasshopper was introduced in recipes dating from Prohibition to describe a sugary nonalcoholic drink that made people jumpy.

Here's a Valentine's Day inspired cocktail - it's a twist on a classic.

Blushing Gimlet
  • 2 oz. good quality Gin
  • 1 oz. St. Germaine Elderflower liquor
  • 3 oz. freshly squeezed grapefruit juice (from 1 large fruit)
  • 1 oz. freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz. simple syrup (optional)
  • Garnish (rosemary, basil, mint, thyme)
  • Pour all ingredients into shaker with ice. Strain and pour into glass. Garnish and enjoy!

Ashley I won't like as it is a sad time for you with passing of your Mom during Valentine.

My Dad's birthday is Feb. 17th. He been gone since June of 2006. I still miss him a lot and think of him so often. Do have wonderful memories of both my parents.

Happy Valentine's Day to you, dear friend.

This is one of my favorite martini recipes for Valentine's Day! The cream cheese frosting around the rim makes it extra yummy! Enjoy a couple of these and watch out for Cupid's arrow! :giggle:

Red Velvet Cake Martini:

Rim martini glass with cream cheese frosting and dip in red sprinkles. In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add 4 oz vodka, 3 oz milk, and 1 tbsp of red relvet cake mix. Shake and strain into martini glass. Garnish with whipped cream and candy hearts.
