He was still a Colonel when he took over command of the Kentucky Brigade on September 20, 1863 at Chickamauga. Lewis wouldn't be promoted for 10 more days on September 30, 1863.
 
I believe, if the math is right, he is the 5th distinct commander of the hapless Orphan Brigade.
Under his command, the brigade was decimated during Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. Their numbers dropped from 1200 men to just 400 by September, many of them having at least one wound to their record.
