Winfield Scott Hancock had a strong Civil War record he could rely on. However, I'm reading Peter Cozzens' The Earth Is Weeping and he doesn't seem to think much of Hancock in the West. His dealings with the Native Americans seem politically inept. Did this come up as an issue during his name being repeatedly tossed around as a presidential candidate, and during his campaign as Democratic nominee?
Do we have any reason in hindsight to think Hancock would have been a good president - in 1868, 1872, 1876, or 1880?
