Hanchett had been business partners with Amos Courtwright in a lumber mill before the war. The partnership was to have been dissolved by Courtwright buying out Hatchett. Courtwright and his brother Isaiah were both lynched in 1875 over an incident that involved the killing of a sheriff. This incident stemmed from Courtwright still owing the estate of Hanchett a sum of money and refusing to be evicted. The sheriff was killed by Isaiah and both Courtwrights were arrested. A mob later hanged both of them. I urge readers to research this incident on their own as it is a long event but this is the bare minimum of it.

To complicate matters , Hanchett's former law partner married his widow and pressed for a settlement from Courtwright. Raymond won a lawsuit in 1870 and the incident boiled over and escalated until 1875.
